In the Friday morning update, the ministry said Ukraine has been successful in recapturing towns and defensive positions near the capital, Kyiv. “Ukrainian counter-attacks, and Russian Forces falling back on overextended supply lines, has allowed Ukraine to re-occupy towns and defensive positions up to 35 kilometres east of Kyiv,” the Ministry of Defence said on Twitter. “Ukrainian Forces are likely to continue to attempt to push Russian Forces back along the north-western axis from Kyiv towards Hostomel Airfield,” it said....

In a video appeal that circulated on social media this month, Grisha Moskovsky spoke out against Yevgeny Prigozhin, a Putin ally and founder of the Wagner Group, and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, saying that they are creating two power groups. He appealed to Russians to be cautious. “Now two gangs are forming in Russia. Two gangs, one gang is the Wagner’s and the other gang is Kadyrov’s. Recently, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated, in an interview with PBS, that the country is not currently considering nuclear warheads and would only do so following a “threat for existence.” However, a document from the Russian Federation in June 2, 2020, lays out the instances in which the country would consider the use of nuclear weapons. The document from the Russian government titled “Fundamentals of the State Policy of the Russian Federation in the Field of Nuclear Deterrence” begins by stating that “state policy in the field of nuclear deterrence shall be defensive in nature, aimed at maintaining the potential of nuclear forces at a level sufficient to ensure nuclear deterrence, and guarantee the protection of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state....

Ukraine’s leader said during his nightly televised address on Friday that he had “discussed the situation on the front line and winter prospects on the battlefield” during a conversation with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak earlier in the day. He said areas of Donbas, which encompasses the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, had become lifeless wastelands following brutal and ongoing battles between Russia and Ukraine. “The front-line situation remains very difficult in the key areas of Donbas—Bakhmut, Soledar, Maryinka, Kreminna …” Zelensky said....

Vadym Skibitsky, the deputy head of Ukrainian military intelligence, told RBC-Ukraine in an interview published on Wednesday that Russia’s supplies of high-precision missiles, including Kh-101, Kh-555 and Kalibr missiles, are running low. “When we talk about the possibility of two to three strikes, we mean that there will be approximately 80 missiles [used] during [an] attack, and maybe more,” he explained. “For example, on December 31, [Russia] used only 20 cruise missiles, although before that they used about 70 or even more....

On Saturday, the Ukrainian armed forces said on its Facebook page that Russia had lost an additional 25 tanks, taking the total number of such vehicles reportedly destroyed since the start of the full-scale invasion on February 24 to 2,034. In its daily update, Ukraine also said that Russia now had lost a total of 4,403 combat armored machines, with 37 destroyed on a single day. “The opponent suffered the biggest losses in the Donetsk and Kryvyi Rih directions,” its Facebook statement said, referring to the center and east of the country....
