Russian Foreign Ministry ambassadors ordered three diplomats from Slovakia, two from Lithuania, and one each from Estonia and Latvia to depart Russia in a week, according to the Associated Press. Slovakia and the three Baltic states expelled Russian diplomats last week to show solidarity with the Czech Republic after their expulsion of Russian diplomats. A statement on the expulsion of Baltic diplomats said that the three countries “continue to pursue an openly hostile course towards our country, hiding behind in this case pseudo-solidarity with the indiscriminate actions of the Czech Republic towards Russia....

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the “special military operation” in Ukraine on February 24, 2022 and hoped his large military would bring Moscow to quick victory against Ukraine, viewed as having weaker armed forces. However, Ukraine responded with a stronger-than-expected defense effort that allowed them to begin their own counteroffensives in recent weeks. Ukraine made significant gains over the weekend, with officials saying they took back more than 1,000 miles of territory formerly occupied by Russia in a surprise counteroffensive near Kharkiv....

The British defense department’s daily intelligence update said in the seven days since Putin announced his partial mobilization, there has been a considerable exodus of Russians seeking to evade call-up. While exact figures are unclear, the number of people who have already escaped from mobilization in Russia likely exceeds the total number of those who were used for the war against Ukraine when it began in February, the defense ministry assessed....

“The president has been clear repeatedly that the United States will work with our allies to defend every inch of NATO territory, and that means every inch. The conflict since February has been Russia’s most costly in terms of military casualties since World War II. Wednesday’s total collated by the Ukrainian military included another Russian aircraft, one tank, two armored personnel carriers, seven artillery systems, seven other vehicles, and five drones...

Ukrainian officials regularly provide updates on Russian military losses. The general staff of the armed forces of Ukraine said on Facebook that since Putin’s war began on February 24, Russia has lost 36,200 military personnel. Putin has also lost 1,589 tanks, 3,754 armored combat vehicles, 804 artillery systems, 246 multiple rocket launchers, 105 air defense systems, 217 aircraft, 658 operational-tactical UAVs, 15 warships, 2,629 vehicles and tankers, and 187 helicopters, according to Ukraine’s combat losses update....

Explosions shook Kyiv and sirens sounded across Ukraine on Thursday morning, during a mass missile attack that followed the commitment by Germany and the U.S. to send Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams tanks. Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, wrote on Telegram that one person had died and two were wounded after a rocket hit a non-residential building in the Holosiivskyi district of the Ukrainian capital. Ukrainian authorities said they were expecting over 30 missiles and that at least 15 missiles were downed....

Robert Habeck, Germany’s Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, met with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on Sunday. State-owned QatarEnergy said in a statement that the two countries “would re-engage and progress discussions on long term LNG supplies,” Reuters reported. Investigators probing the computer intrusion said in a notice to lawmakers Tuesday the September 10 attack that left many systems offline or locked had been caused by a type of ransomware called DoppelPaymer, Aachener Zeitung reported. Citing “private security firms,” the report, filed by the Ministry of Justice of the German state North Rhine-Westphalia, suggested the ransomware had been used globally and previously traced to hackers that appeared to be based in Russia....

There are roughly 1,000 Russian troops in Kazakhstan according to Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense. The Kremlin-supporting Life website reported that the cyberattack by the Killnet and Killmilk hacker groups took place at 7 a.m. on Monday. The groups said the rocket systems - credited by the Ukrainians with shifting the balance in the war against Russia - had been responsible for thousands of deaths. “The notorious HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems, supplied to Ukraine by the aforementioned military-industrial corporation, allow the criminal authorities of the Kiev regime to kill civilians, destroy the infrastructure and social facilities of the still temporarily occupied Ukraine,” the hackers said in a statement reported by Life....

Aleksey Martynov, 28, the head of a department within the Moscow city government, was reportedly mobilized on September 23 and killed on October 10 while fighting in Ukraine. “In his youth he served in the Semyonovsky Regiment,” Natalya Loseva said in a statement on her Telegram channel. “He had no combat experience. He was sent to the front after basically a few days. He died heroically on October 10.”...
