Igor Girkin, also known as Igor Strelkov, is a former Russian intelligence officer who played a key role in Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the conflict in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region. He has used his Telegram social media channel to criticize how Russia’s forces have fought in the war and taken aim at the botched mobilization announced by Vladimir Putin. Girkin repeated his criticism of Russia’s war effort in a clip in a video on his Telegram page that was shared by Belarusian media outlet NEXTA, which tweets about the war....

The legislation unanimously passed by the parliament’s lower house, or Duma, comes amid a crackdown on independent media outlets in Russia following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. State Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said the legislation could enter into force as early as Saturday and would prohibit information that “discredits the use of the Russian Armed Forces,” agencies reported. The bill will be sent to the upper house before going to President Vladimir Putin to be signed into law....

The Ilyushin Il-112V military transport aircraft crashed near Moscow on Tuesday, the aircraft’s manufacturer United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) said in a statement posted on Twitter. A video of the crash that was posted online captured the plane flying at low altitude with one of its wings on fire. The aircraft is seen making a sharp turn before plummeting to the ground seconds later, prompting flames and smoke to rise from the crash site....

Russia’s Defense Minister Army General Sergey Shoigu announced the decision at a Monday board meeting of the Russian Defense Ministry. Shoigu explained that the military plans to set-up approximately 20 new military units and formations in Russia’s western region—which borders Ukraine and Belarus. “Our Western colleagues’ actions are ruining the world security system and forcing us to take appropriate measures in response. Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Lieutenant-General Igor Konashenkov, said that his country’s forces had destroyed a Ukrainian platoon of weapons including the U.S.-produced M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS). “During a counter-battery fight, a Ukrainian platoon of Alder multiple launch rocket systems and American HIMARS were destroyed near the village of Pyatigorskoye, in the Kharkiv region,” Konashenkov said, according to the Tass news agency. The Alder is a Ukrainian-produced MLRS with guided ammunition that entered service into the Ukraine’s armed forces in 2018....

The Russian Foreign Ministry held a board meeting Wednesday led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who discussed along with his colleagues the current state of the U.S.-Russia relationship. Following the talks, the ministry released a statement characterizing the participants’ views of the tortured ties between the two powers. “It was noted during the discussion that bilateral relations had approached a dangerous confrontational threshold through the fault of Washington,” the ministry said, “who have provoked an unprecedented escalation between our states over the recent years....

The launch happened at the Sary-Shagan test site in Kazakhstan Monday. “After a series of tests, the new ABM system has proved its characteristics and successfully completed the task, engaging the target with a given accuracy,” said Colonel Sergei Grabchuk, the commander of the Russia anti-missile defense system formation. Russia’s Ministry of Defense said the missile is in service with the Russian Aerospace Forces and was designed to protect Moscow from air and space attacks....

The video, obtained by the independent Russian-language news website Newsader, shows the unidentified officer addressing concerned residents of the village of Nyonoksa. He discusses the circumstances of the explosion, which Russia’s state nuclear company Rosatom said took place at the offshore site in Nyonoksa on August 8. The failed test is thought to have involved the nuclear-powered cruise missile in Russian known as “Burevestnik” and in the U.S. as “Skyfall....

Yevgeny Agafonov was detained by officers in St Petersburg on January 31 during the demonstrations in support of jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. But the group Apologia Protesta (Apology of Protest) said on its Telegram channel that he was not involved in the protests and was simply on his way to an arts and crafts shop before being detained by officers. It said that he did not know about the protests and could not hear what the police officers were shouting at him....

The report was published Tuesday in the Russian investigative newspaper Novaya Gazeta and concerned a number of hospitals in the Russian city of Belgorod. It was unclear if any other cities were undergoing a similar transition with their respective hospitals. The Russian embassy in Washington, D.C., refuted the claims made by the White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki, who has accused Russia of conducting a “false flag operation in eastern Ukraine.” Psaki said on Friday that the Russian operatives were “trained in urban warfare and were using explosives to carry out acts of sabotage against Russia’s own proxy forces,” referring to Moscow-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine where a bloody war has been raging since 2014....

The body of Yuri Voronov, 61, was found in his home in the ultra-wealthy Vyborgsky district of the Leningrad region at around 2 p.m. on Monday with a gunshot wound to his head, a pistol nearby and casings at the bottom of the pool, according to 47news.ru.
