Rune Factory games started as an offshoot of Harvest Moon, the first having the subtitle ‘A Fantasy Harvest Moon’ but have developed their own style over time. Sim games like Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, and Harvest Moon have a wonderfully relaxing feel while players tend to crops, craft items, or chat with the town’s folk. Rune Factory 4 Special takes these key points and adds adventures like going through dungeons, slaying monsters, and finding treasure or material for crafting.

Unlike other sim games, in Rune Factory 4 Special, players can tame monsters in dungeons, which then help out on the farm or during battle. This well-rounded game gives gamers plenty to do while also offering a relaxing feeling of farm life. Players are free to choose how they spend their time in-game, building up the town by completing tasks, working on their farm, or traveling through monster-infested areas.
The critically acclaimed RPG simulation game has seen much success since 2013, selling over 300,000 copies in North America and Europe. With the next installment in the franchise coming soon in 2022, XSEED has announced that Xbox, PlayStation, and PC gamers will have a chance to venture to the region of Selphia and embark on their own grand adventure on December 7, 2021.
Rune Factory 4 Special will be available digitally on PlayStation 4, and for the first time inthe series, available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam or the Microsoft Store for $29.99. This is the first time a Rune Factory game has been ported to an Xbox console, which seems to be a move XSEED has been working on. Last month, Marvelous Entertainment and XSEED ported Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town to Xbox and PlayStation after being released on Switch in July 2020.
Rune Factory 4 Special is a dating and life sim turned action RPG, which features several dungeons, crops to grow, monsters to tame, and 12 eligible candidates for marriage. The updated game version will feature extra content from the original, like ‘Newlywed Mode,’ where characters can continue adventures with their spouse after marriage, and “Hell” difficultly for players who want a real challenge. The ported versions will also include the DLC Another Episode pack, which offers storybook-styled episodes for all 12 marriage candidates, fully voices in Japanese and English.
This gives long-time fans time to revisit the story, or gamers new to the franchise try it before the new Rune Factory game. Rune Factory 5 will feature non-gender restricted marriage for the first time in the franchise and a brand new cast of characters. Rune Factory 5 is set to release on March 22, 2022, but fans can download a copy of Rune Factory 4 Special on Playstation, Xbox, and PC starting on December 7. Rune Factory 4 Special is currently available on Nintendo Switch.
